St. Aidan's Weekly Newsletter
The mission of St. Aidan's is to make disciples by proclaiming Christ as Lord and making a difference in our community.

Proclaim with Me the Greatness of the Lord!

Our Lectionary Readings for October 28, the Twenty-Third Sunday after Pentecost are: Job 42:1-6, 10-17; Psalm 34:1-8, 19-22; Hebrews 7:23-28; Mark 10:46-52

Click Here to view the Lectionary Readings.
And the disciples called to Bartimaeus, the blind man, saying, "Take heart; get up, Jesus is calling you." Mark 10:49
When Bartimaeus approached him, Jesus asked, "What do you want me to do for you?" Jesus asks us the same question. Let's take heart and respond honestly, telling the Lord what it is that we want him to do for us.
Prayer for Stewardship
O God, our loving Creator and Giver of all good gifts, bless our parish, strengthen our faith, and grant us the spirit of Christian stewardship so that we may give generously of our time, talent and treasure to build your kingdom here in our church and throughout the world. All this we ask in the name of Jesus our Savior. Amen.
PLEDGE SUNDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2018
Pledge Sunday and the end of our annual Stewardship Season, is on Sunday, October 28. We ask you to consider prayerfully your support of the parish.

During the past year the Vestry and Treasurer have diligently watched expenses and sought additional revenue sources.

Our goal for 2019 is to meet our projected budget of $160,000 through pledges and remain a viable and faithful worshiping community which loves God and serves God’s people. Thank you for your continued support of St. Aidan’s.
Trunk or Treat at St. Aidan's, Sunday, October 28, 4-7 pm. Little trick or Treaters are invited to Trick or Treat in a safe environment.
Parishioners are invited to provide a decorated trunk with treats in St. Aidan's parking lot. You may wear a costume, too! There is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board at St. Aidan's.

One car trunk will have gluten-free items similar to those featured in the Teal Pumpkin Project. Another car trunk will have small non-edible gift items such as coloring books. Other car trunks will have assorted candy items. Come enjoy the fun! Happy Halloween!

Vestry Notes from October 2018 Meeting from Gloria Kelley
To keep the parish in the loop, I am providing a quick rundown of the October vestry meeting.

● Jane Bush has volunteered to serve on the vestry for the remainder of the year. Already a big help.

● The church is still looking for a nursery attendant. It is a paid position so ask your friends or neighbors that might be looking for a rewarding job just a couple hours a week.

● Darlene Kincaid has joined Altar Guild so they are up to four teams. One or two more would be very helpful.

● We have a roof leak and Tim is looking for the source so that we can get it repaired at minimal expense.

● The playground area is in serious need of rubber mulching. The cost of the mulch is around $800 and we are making plans to raise the funds. More info to come later.

● The plans for Care and Share evening and auction set for December 1st are well underway.

● The Be Our Guest group (formerly Church Basement Ladies) have added the parish hall cleanup to their list of duties after coffee hour. Perhaps BOG buddies will help out with this chore.

● Unison email system is up and running. If you have not yet responded to the email Julie sent, please do so. If you did not receive it, check with her to make sure she has your correct address. In the near future, Julie plans a short training session during coffee hour for those of us that are techno-phobes.

● Backsnack packing is ongoing on Wednesdays. If you have a little time, stop by and lend a hand. If you have an hour on Thursday mornings, offer to deliver the packs to schools. And don’t forget about Center of Grace dinners. Sometimes both of these groups have plenty of help and you can just visit, but sometimes they are working short handed and need you.

● Our community outreach special project for October is Trunk or Treat on October 28. We have done some community advertising and would like to make a good showing so join us if you can.

● The bishop for Kansas will be voted on October 19th. There will be an information forum during coffee hour on Sunday, October 14th. (Note:This forum was a great success last Sunday.)

Bishop Michael Curry will be attending the ordination and consecration of the new bishop on March 2nd in Topeka.
Adult Forum: Religions of the World
The Adult Forum is looking at the other major religions of the world and comparing and contrasting them with Christianity. We meet in Sifers Hall at 9 am on Sunday. Sunday, October 28:Hinduism. Sunday, October 28: More Hinduism. Please join us - there will be coffee.
Wednesdays at Noon
Please join us at noon on Wednesdays for our mid-week refresher gathering and the story of Moses in "The Prince of Egypt." Bring a sack lunch!

The Rev. Cathleen Chittenden Bascom was elected the Tenth Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Kansas.
The Rev. Cathleen Chittenden Bascom, D.Min., from the Diocese of Iowa, today was elected as the 10th bishop to lead the Episcopal Diocese of Kansas. She was elected on the second ballot during an election that took place in the worship space of Grace Cathedral in Topeka, receiving 64 votes from lay delegates and 56 votes from clergy.

Bascom is the first woman to be elected bishop since the diocese was formed in 1859. This also marked the first time in the history of the Episcopal Church that a bishop heading a diocese was elected from a slate of candidates who all were women.

Others on the ballot were the Rev. Martha N. Macgill of the Diocese of Maryland, and the Rev. Helen-Svoboda-Barber, D.Min., from the Diocese of North Carolina.

The Very Rev. Foster Mays, president of the governing body that has overseen the diocese in the interim period between bishops, said, “It delights me that Cathleen Bascom will be our next bishop. While this election was historic, at its core lay delegates and clergy were selecting the person who will lead this diocese for the next decade or more. I believe Mother Bascom’s many gifts and years of experience will serve this diocese well.

“I know that clergy and lay leaders from all our congregations are looking forward to the opportunity to participate in ministry with her, to share together the good news of Jesus and to serve the world in the name of our Lord. I’m very excited for the future of the Episcopal Diocese of Kansas under her leadership.”

Bascom has been serving since the fall of 2014 as Assistant Professor of Religion and Philosophy at Waldorf University in Forest City, Iowa. She previously had been dean of the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Des Moines, Iowa, as well as rector of St. Stephen’s in Newton, Iowa.

She served for eight years in the Diocese of Kansas from 1993 to 2001, leading ministry efforts at Kansas State University in Manhattan.

She is the third priest to have served within the Diocese of Kansas to be elected bishop. The first was Frank Millspaugh, who was dean of Grace Cathedral, Topeka, when he was elected bishop in 1895. The second was Richard Grein, who was rector of St. Michael and all Angels in Mission when he was elected in 1981.

She also is the second priest to become Kansas’ bishop while serving in the Diocese of Iowa. The first was Thomas Vail, the diocese’s first bishop, who was rector of Trinity Church in Muscatine, Iowa, when he was elected bishop in 1864.

Bascom and her husband Tim have two sons – Conrad, age 25, and Luke, age 21.

The service of ordination and consecration by which Bascom becomes a bishop and assumes responsibility for the pastoral and administrative work of the diocese, will take place on Saturday, March 2, 2019, in Grace Cathedral, Topeka. The chief consecrator will be Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Michael Curry.

BackSnack Packing for Elementary Schools:  You might have noticed the notes and drawings on the western wall of Sifers Hall when you come for Adult Forum before worship or share some fellowship and snacks with others after worship. These are thank you notes from some of the elementary school children who benefit from the BackSnack Program through the school year; these are notes written specifically to the good people of Saint Aidan’s for their faithful support of the program.

The BackSnack Program provides healthy snacks for eligible school children through a program administered by the school system, Harvester’s, and organizations such as St. Aidan’s. On Wednesday we pick up the boxes containing the packaged snacks at the Olathe School Resource Center in the early afternoon, and then at 5 pm we meet in Sifers Hall to “pack” the backsnacks in plastic bags which are then placed back in the boxes for delivery to five area elementary schools the next morning. Volunteers from St. Aidan’s then deliver the boxes of snacks to the respective elementary schools the next morning (they load the boxes either Wednesday afternoons after packing or Thursday morning before delivery.

We have reached out to other churches in the area to assist with the packing on Wednesday afternoons and encourage more parishioners to give half an hour of their time on Wednesday afternoons to pitch in and help pack – we guarantee a good time doing a good thing for some good children!! We are also reaching out to the parish for additional drivers. We need two more drivers on Thursday mornings to deliver BackSnacks in order to continue this important and beneficial ministry to the children of the community. Please see either BackSnack Coordinator Don Seifert (913 208-7393) or Father Shawn (913 660-5647) for more information – thank you and God bless you!
