Feast Days 3

This week we examine the spiritual feast days of Meskel, Michaelmas, and Paryushan.

Meskel is a Christian holiday in the Ethiopian Orthodox and Eritrean Orthodox churches that commemorates the discovery of the True Cross by the Roman Empress Helena (Saint Helena) in the fourth century.

The Meskel celebration includes the burning of a large bonfire, or Demera. Saint Helena had a dream that she should make a bonfire and that the smoke would show her where the True Cross was buried. So she ordered the people of Jerusalem to bring wood and make a huge pile. After adding frankincense to the bonfire the smoke rose high up to the sky and returned to the ground, exactly to the spot where the Cross had been buried.

The Horn of Africa has 36 million Orthodox Christians, the world’s second-largest Orthodox population after Russia.

Michaelmas also known as the Feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, or the Feast of Saint Michael and All Angels is a Christian festival observed on 29th of September. In Anglican and Episcopal tradition, there are three or four archangels: namely Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, and often, Uriel.

Paryushan is the most important Jain religious observance of the year. For both Shvetambars, who observe the festival over a period of eight days, and Digambars, for whom Paryushan Parva lasts 10 days, this is a time of intensive study, reflection and purification. Jainism is one of the world's oldest religions, originating in India at least 2,500 years ago. The spiritual goal of Jainism is to become liberated from the endless cycle of rebirth and to achieve an all-knowing state called moksha.
Next week we’ll look at the Jewish festival of Sukkot, St Francis Day, and Canadian Thanksgiving.

Please let me know if you’d like to sit down and talk or enjoy a coffee, at a social distance of course, or feel free to call me at 785-670-0158, or email me at tbaker1102@yahoo.com. My office hours are Monday - Thursday 10 am - 3 pm. … Fr. Tom
Jesus said, "For truly I tell you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ will by no means lose their reward." Mark 9:41
Jesus' statement about a cup of water shows that very practical and simple acts are precisely the stewardship deeds he hopes his disciples make. Our care and support for others, no matter how small are significant in the eyes of God.

Gearing Up for BackSnacks 2021-2022

BackSnackers: I’ve heard from everyone and the whole team is on board again for another school year. Thank you all! I also have confirmed with College Church that we will continue to pick up our Harvesters boxes from their location. So we’re set to go soon.

Based on the Olathe School District calendar, I’ve attached a schedule of our loading and delivery dates for the year. If Harvesters delivery is on schedule, we’ll begin by loading on Wednesday, September 29 and delivery on Thursday, September 30. By then, I’ll have confirmation of any changes to the number of boxes at each school.

Thanks again, and please let me know if you have any questions.

Don Seifert

Thanksgivings and Prayers

Thanksgivings – Birthdays & Anniversaries
We give thanks for the birthdays of Rev.Tom Baker and Jessica Alexander.

We give thanks for the people of St. Aidan’s and the privilege of serving each other, our church and our community throughout the year. We give thanks for the faithfulness and resilience of St. Aidan's parish as we all work together during this difficult time, finding new ways to stay connected in spite of the challenges.

Cycle of Prayer –
In the Anglican Cycle of Prayer, we pray for the church of the Church in Wales

In the World Council of Churches Cycle of Prayer we pray for the people of Belarus, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine.

In the Kansas Cycle of Prayer, we pray for St. Luke's, Shawnee.

For Our Parish Leadership –
We pray for our rector, Rev. Tom Baker and his wife, Cherie. We pray for the members of the Vestry: Senior Warden Jane Bush, Mark Sappenfield, Sarah Smith, Kathy Mencer, Bonnie Eckel, Clarice Ewing and Paul Reed; for the Vestry Clerk, Janet Seifert; for our Treasurer, Tim Tatlock; and for our delegates, Carolyn Sturgeon, and Sarah Smith.

For Our Troops, Veterans, and Law Enforcement –
Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care and keeping all the men and women in the service and law enforcement at home and broad. Defend them with your grace; give them courage; and grant them a sense of your abiding presence; through Jesus Christ. Amen.

For the Departed –
Eternal Lord God, you hold all souls in life: Give to your whole Church in paradise and on earth your light and your peace; and grant that all your faithful people may at the last enter into your unending joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Guidance and Grace
Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

 For Healing –
Heavenly Father, giver of life and health: Comfort and relieve your sick servants, and give your power of healing to those who minister to their needs, that those for whom our prayers are offered may be strengthened in their weakness and have confidence in your loving care; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
