August 30 Sunday Worship Service
St. Aidan's Feast Day Celebration
St. Aidan of Lindisfarne
O holy Bishop Aidan, Apostle of the North and light of the Celtic Church, glorious in humility, noble in poverty, zealous monk and loving missionary, intercede for us sinners that Christ our God may have mercy on our souls.

Thou didst teach and preserve Christ's doctrine and didst spread the faith throughout Northumbria, O holy Aidan. Unceasingly pray to God for us, for thou dost worship before His throne for ever. Amen.

"He was a pontiff inspired with a passionate love of virtue, but at the same time full of a surpassing mildness and gentleness." - St. Bede the Venerable.

Fr. Tom's Talk ...
To help celebrate the feast of our church this Sunday, August 30, I thought I’d share with you a short history about our church with some information taken from the 2000 Parish Directory.

The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 made Kansas a territory whose people would decide whether it was admitted to the Union as a slave or free state. This set off a rivalry with proslavery supporters from bordering Missouri. The conflict escalated into the violence known as “Bleeding Kansas.” In the midst of these turbulent times the first Episcopal service held in Olathe on May 8, 1858 in a private home, was led by the Rev. Mr. John Drummond, a missionary priest living near Spring Hill.

In 1862 Rev. B.T. Bensted came from Canada as an instructor at the Kansas School for the Deaf. The church grew under his leadership and, with the energies of the St. Bridget’s Chapter of the Daughters of the King, they built Emmanuel Church that stood until the 1960’s. In the next twenty years the church moved three times and changed its name to St. Aidan’s. In 1985 we moved to our current location.

Our parish was named in honor of Aidan of Lindisfarne, an Irish monk and missionary credited with converting the Anglo-Saxons in Northumbria to Christianity. To find out more about St. Aidan I encourage you to attend Adult Form this Sunday, August 30. To quote the Rev. Doctor Martin Luther King, “We are not makers of history. We are made by history.”

For 162 years St. Aidan’s has been worshiping, healing, and serving our community and the Diocese of Kansas. I give thanks and hold in prayer all the men, women, and Rectors who have lived and died and have shaped and strengthened us. Yes, we face challenging times but so did those who came before us. Like them we will carry the torch of our heritage to light the way into a bright future.

Please let me know if you’d like to sit down and talk or enjoy a coffee, at a social distance of course, or feel free to call me. My office hours are Monday - Thursday 10 am - 3 pm. 785-670-0158; tbaker1102@yahoo.com.

Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; for you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.” Matt.16:23
What a turnaround for Peter! Last week acclaimed by Jesus, this week called Satan. It reminds us that we wont always get it right, won’t always avoid a nasty stumble. Like Peter, we too can recover and become a great follower of Jesus.
