Labor Day Weekend

Prayer for Labor Day...

Almighty God, you have so linked our lives one with another that all we do affects, for good or ill, all other lives: So guide us in the work we do, that we may do it not for self alone, but for the common good; and, as we seek a proper return for our own labor, make us mindful of the rightful aspirations of other workers, and arouse our concern for those who are out of work; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. (Book of Common Prayer, p. 261)

Labor Day

Labor Day is one of my favorite holidays. Not because of hot dogs and burgers on the grill, or because (for many) it’s a three day weekend, but because it’s a National holiday that celebrates the common good. No, I’m not recommending Communism, I’m remembering one of Jesus’ most important teachings: “Do to others as you would have them do to you,” Luke 6:31.

On September 5, 1882, union leaders in New York City organized what is now considered the country’s first Labor Day parade. 10,000 workers took unpaid time off to march through the streets. Labor Day honors all who fought tirelessly for workers' rights, especially the eight-hour work day we have now. A few of the persons of note inducted into the U.S. Labor Department Hall of Fame include:

1. Philip Randolph, acknowledged as the greatest black labor leader in American history. He founded the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters and was a pioneer in advancing racial equality within the labor movement. He was at the forefront of campaigns to improve wages and working conditions for black and white alike. Randolph directed the March on Washington movement to end employment discrimination in the defense industry and a national civil disobedience campaign to ban segregation in the armed forces. The nonviolent protest and mass action effort inspired the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s.

2. Frances Perkins was a faithful Episcopalian throughout her adult life. She became secretary of labor during the Great Depression. She helped create and administer landmark legislation leading the nation out of its economic paralysis, including the establishment of the U.S. Employment Service, guaranteeing the right of workers to organize and bargain collectively, and the establishment of a minimum wage for the neediest. She also directed the formulation and enactment of the Social Security Act, perhaps the most important piece of social legislation in U.S. history. She recognized in Holy Men and Women, her feast day is May 13.

The deaf man with the speech problem experienced immediate relief. Sometimes our stewardship, our charity, our giving, our intervention, has an immediate impact. Sometimes it takes a while. ut whether immediate or over time, no kind deed of ours goes without an impact.

September 5 is Discretionary Fund Sunday

The first Sunday of the month all cash offerings go into the Rector's Discretionary Fund. This is used for those in need.

HURRICANE IDA

On Sunday, August 29, sixteen years after Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, Hurricane Ida made landfall in the same region. This Category 4 storm brought flooding and damaging winds that caused a loss of water to hundreds of thousands and a loss of electricity to over 1 million people. Episcopal Relief & Development is working closely with the Diocese of Louisiana and other regional partners in what will be a long-term response. Refreshments and Coffee Hour

“At our last Vestry meeting it was decided that with Covid numbers increasing, our Bishops mandate to wear masks during services and to ensure the safety of all our members we will until further notice hold Coffee Hour outside after services. Coffee will be served in paper cups and individually wrapped goodies will be provided. We didn’t want to end coffee hour so grab a chair and join us!”

Gearing Up for BackSnacks 2021-2022

BackSnackers: I’ve heard from everyone and the whole team is on board again for another school year. Thank you all! I also have confirmed with College Church that we will continue to pick up our Harvesters boxes from their location. So we’re set to go soon.

Based on the Olathe School District calendar, I’ve attached a schedule of our loading and delivery dates for the year. If Harvesters delivery is on schedule, we’ll begin by loading on Wednesday, September 29 and delivery on Thursday, September 30. By then, I’ll have confirmation of any changes to the number of boxes at each school.

Center of Grace: Volunteers are need to help pass out food at Center of Grace on September 26.

St. Aidan's helps prepare and hand out meals at Center of Grace in Olathe, on the fourth Thursday of the month. September 26 is our next day to serve. You're also welcome to drop off individually wrapped deserts to the church by 2 pm that Thursday.

Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Healing –

Heavenly Father, giver of life and health: Comfort and relieve your sick servants, and give your power of healing to those who minister to their needs, that those for whom our prayers are offered may be strengthened in their weakness and have confidence in your loving care; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
