Fr. Tom's Talk
Spiritual Feasts

For our next several Tom’s Talk I want to share some important Spiritual Feasts days with you. I used to send emails, at the hospital I worked at, listing the dates and meaning of Spiritual Feast days to relate the idea that everyone is spiritual and some people are religious. I know that may sound like a very strange thing for a priest to write but hang on. Everyone is spiritual and some people are religious, can sound like spirituality is somehow better, more important, than religion. Especially when over 30 percent of Americans define themselves as spiritual but not religious.

Spirituality is about purpose, meaning, identity and the recognition that there is something greater than ourselves. The word religion comes from a Latin word that means “to tie or bind together” and is defined as an organized system of beliefs and rituals centering on a supernatural being or beings. Those who are simply spiritual can find in family ties, work, success, nature, beauty that which is greater than themselves while those who are religious also believe in a being that is greater than themselves.

Their are some important Jewish and feast days in September; this past 6 and 7th the Jewish people celebrated the high holy days of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. A time of introspection, abstinence, prayer and penitence. The story of Abraham is read, the ram's horn is sounded, and special foods are prepared and shared. The biblical name for this holiday is Yom Teruah literally "day of shouting or blasting" specified by Leviticus 23:23–32. Customs include sounding the shofar, a cleaned-out ram's horn, attending synagogue services, reciting a special liturgy, and enjoying festive meals such as apples dipped in honey, hoping to evoke a sweet new year. Later this month the Jewish people will celebrate Yom Kippur, Sukkot, and Shemini Atzeret. There will also be the Hindu feast of Ganesh Chaturthi and the Wicca feast of Imbolc that I’ll write more about in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.

Please let me know if you’d like to sit down and talk or enjoy a coffee, at a social distance of course, or feel free to call me at 785-670-0158, or email me at tbaker1102@yahoo.com. My office hours are Monday - Thursday 10 am - 3 pm. … Fr. Tom
Jesus called the crowd Mark and his disciples, and said to them, "If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves." Mark 8:34
Denying ourselves is usually NOT the easiest way to go. On the contrary, we are frequently encouraged to consume, to help the economy, to satisfy our needs and our wants (easy to confuse those two!)

HURRICANE IDA
On Sunday, August 29, sixteen years after Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, Hurricane Ida made landfall in the same region. This Category 4 storm brought flooding and damaging winds that caused a loss of water to hundreds of thousands and a loss of electricity to over 1 million people. Episcopal Relief & Development is working closely with the Diocese of Louisiana and other regional partners in what will be a long-term response. Your generous gift will help alleviate suffering for the most vulnerable residents impacted by Hurricane Ida. To make a gift, please click this link... episcopalrelief.org/haiti-relief.
Refreshments and Coffee Hour
“At our last Vestry meeting it was decided that with Covid numbers increasing, our Bishops mandate to wear masks during services and to ensure the safety of all our members we will until further notice hold Coffee Hour outside after services. Coffee will be served in paper cups and individually wrapped goodies will be provided. We didn’t want to end coffee hour so grab a chair and join us!”
Gearing Up for BackSnacks 2021-2022

BackSnackers: I’ve heard from everyone and the whole team is on board again for another school year. Thank you all! I also have confirmed with College Church that we will continue to pick up our Harvesters boxes from their location. So we’re set to go soon.

Based on the Olathe School District calendar, I’ve attached a schedule of our loading and delivery dates for the year. If Harvesters delivery is on schedule, we’ll begin by loading on Wednesday, September 29 and delivery on Thursday, September 30. By then, I’ll have confirmation of any changes to the number of boxes at each school.

Thanks again, and please let me know if you have any questions.

Don Seifert

Thanksgivings and Prayers

Thanksgivings – Birthdays & Anniversaries
We give thanks for the birthday of Paul Reed.

We give thanks for the people of St. Aidan’s and the privilege of serving each other, our church and our community throughout the year. We give thanks for the faithfulness and resilience of St. Aidan's parish as we all work together during this difficult time, finding new ways to stay connected in spite of the challenges.

Cycle of Prayer –
In the Anglican Cycle of Prayer, we pray for the church of the Province of Uganda.

In the World Council of Churches Cycle of Prayer we pray for the people of Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Kosovo, Montenegro and Servia.

In the Kansas Cycle of Prayer, we pray for Breakthrough/Episcopal Social Services in Wichita.

For Our Parish Leadership –
We pray for our rector, Rev. Tom Baker and his wife, Cherie. We pray for the members of the Vestry: Senior Warden Jane Bush, Mark Sappenfield, Sarah Smith, Kathy Mencer, Bonnie Eckel, Clarice Ewing and Paul Reed; for the Vestry Clerk, Janet Seifert; for our Treasurer, Tim Tatlock; and for our delegates, Carolyn Sturgeon, and Sarah Smith.

For Our Troops, Veterans, and Law Enforcement –
Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care and keeping all the men and women in the service and law enforcement at home and broad. Defend them with your grace; give them courage; and grant them a sense of your abiding presence; through Jesus Christ. Amen.

For the Departed –
Eternal Lord God, you hold all souls in life: Give to your whole Church in paradise and on earth your light and your peace; and grant that all your faithful people may at the last enter into your unending joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Guidance and Grace
Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

 For Healing –
Heavenly Father, giver of life and health: Comfort and relieve your sick servants, and give your power of healing to those who minister to their needs, that those for whom our prayers are offered may be strengthened in their weakness and have confidence in your loving care; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
