Fr. Tom's Talk ...
For the next several Tom’s Talks we’ll be hearing about little known Holy Men and Women. Today we meet St. Mawes a Briton hermit and abbot who lived in Cornwall, near Falmouth, where he is revered to this day. He also spent time in France where he is known as St. Maudez. A monastic founder, he established monasteries and churches in Cornwall and in Brittany.

Saint Mawes lived in the 5th or 6th century and his feast day is celebrated on the 18th of November. It is believed he was born in Ireland and then moved to Cornwall to live as a hermit. In the days of King Childbert I (496-558), Saint Mawes visited Devon and Cornwall, and was known for preaching outdoors and founding a town on the River Fal named after him. He and his disciples also traveled throughout Amorica, a peninsula of France, to tell the people about Jesus, to encourage converts, and to build churches.

Saint Mawes eventually established a monastic community on Saint Maudez Island. One day the last fire on the island was accidentally extinguished. Mawes sent a serving boy at low tide to cross to the mainland and bring back a flame. As the boy set off back, the tide came in. The waves rose higher and higher, threatening to engulf the flame; but the boy stood on a rock, prayed to Saint Mawes, and discovered the rock rising miraculously so that it never sank beneath the sea. When the tide went out again, the flame was successfully brought back. Saint Mawes founded over 70 churches and is venerated in the Roman Catholic, Anglican, and Orthodox churches. Next week we’ll look at the life of Saint Darerca.

Please let me know if you’d like to sit down and talk or enjoy a coffee, at a social distance of course, or feel free to call me at 785-670-0158, or email me at tbaker1102@yahoo.com. My office hours are Monday - Thursday 10 am - 3 pm. … Fr. Tom
"I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit." John 15:5
We are the branches that bear much fruit, because we abide in Jesus. We listen to his words that we should love one another as he has loved us.
