ABIDE

In following Jesus our first priority is Discipleship: practicing the Way of Jesus. Discipleship is the starting point for everything else we do together as a congregation. Being a disciple of Jesus is allowing Christ to shape us into his likeness, through the Holy Spirit given to us in baptism.

So, how do we abide in Christ? Discipleship is a way of life, not just our identity as a Christian. Being a disciple is abiding in Christ. The word abide, or meno, in Greek, means to remain, to stay with, to endure, and it is through the Holy Spirit Christians are said to be rooted as it were in Christ, knitted to him by the Holy Spirit we have received from him.

The first step is to consciously turn our attention to God each day in prayer and have an honest, simple conversation. There is no right or wrong way to pray. HELP! covers a lot. There is also Thanks, Sorry and Wow! These can be said anytime and anywhere. As we know, conversation involves both speaking and listening.

One of the ways we can listen to God is by reading and meditating on Scripture. I know this can seem intimidating. But I encourage you to start by reading one of the Gospels in the New Testament: Matthew, Mark, Luke or John and simply read one chapter each day. Luke or Mark is a good place to start.

Each gospel, from a different perspective, tells the story of Jesus’ life, teaching, ministry, death and resurrection. If you don’t have a daily practice, I invite you to start by setting aside 5 or 10 minutes each day for prayer and reading a short passage of scripture. There are also daily online devotionals: “Forward Day by Day” or “Pray As You Go". They can be helpful tools to help you keep a daily practice (links below).

The apostles gathered around Jesus and told him al that they had done and taught. He said to them, "Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while." Mark 6:30-31
Being a steward doesn't mean knocking ourselves out all the time. It does mean taking care of our own need and the needs of our family too.

For Guidance and Grace
Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

 For Healing –
Heavenly Father, giver of life and health: Comfort and relieve your sick servants, and give your power of healing to those who minister to their needs, that those for whom our prayers are offered may be strengthened in their weakness and have confidence in your loving care; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
