Fr. Tom's Talk

Butterflies may well be the best loved of all insects. For millennia, they have attracted the admiration of people around the world. Their metamorphosis from caterpillar to, winged adult has captured the imagination of many writers and artists, and has come to symbolize beauty, freedom, transformation, hope, new life and resurrection.

The life cycle of a butterfly is a miraculous phenomenon. Whereas the young of mammals and birds look like small versions of the adults, butterflies and moths go through a major transformation that restructures their entire bodies. To achieve this transformation, a butterfly or moth passes through four district stages: egg, caterpillar (or larva), chrysalis (or pupa), and adult. An entomologist, or insect scientist, would describe this as a complete metamorphosis because the form the butterfly takes is different at each stage.

What about our own spiritual lives in Christ? In a wonderful cartoon I saw recently, a caterpillar was sitting in a chair at a cafe's table talking with a butterfly sitting on a chair on the other side of the table. The caterpillar said to the butterfly, "You've changed." The butterfly said to the caterpillar, "We're supposed to change."

Over the summer months, it may be very interesting to reflect upon what spiritual metamorphosis has taken place in YOUR life. How have you changed? What stage of your personal spiritual metamorphosis has captured your imagination? How might your spiritual metamorphosis equip you for putting your faith into action? How might a total transformation help you to seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? If God can change a caterpillar into a butterfly, just imagine what God can do with you!

Please let me know if you’d like to sit down and talk or enjoy a coffee, at a social distance of course, or feel free to call me at 785-670-0158, or email me at tbaker1102@yahoo.com. My office hours are Monday - Thursday 10 am - 3 pm. … Fr. Tom
Herodias' daughter went and said to her mother, "What should I ask for?" Mark 6:24
While hating the gruesome answer Herodias gave her daughter, we can acknowledge that the girl's question was a good one. What should we ask for? It's not too different from the question in the parable of the Good Samaritan: "So who is my neighbor?" Good stewards ask these questions a lot, as they strive to respond to Jesus all to love one another.
