Fr. Tom's Talk ...

In the creation story God rested from work on the seventh day. Shabbat is more than just a day off from labor. It is a day of physical and spiritual renewal. In his book "Sabbath: Finding Rest, Renewal, and Delight in Our Busy Lives," Wayne Muller writes, "In today's world, with with its relentless emphasis on success and productivity, we have lost the necessary rhythm of life, the balance between work and rest. Constantly striving, we feel exhausted and deprived in the midst of great abundance. We long for time with friends and family, we long for a moment to ourselves "(Bantam Books,2000)." That's the real meaning and purpose of Shabbat, we are given the gift to restore balance in our lives. To not allow all our work, errands, and distractions to block us form listening to God.

Psalm 46:10 encourages us to "Be still, and know that I am God." Mark's, Matthew's, and Luke's Gospel all have stories of Jesus retreating to a isolated place to pray. No matter if we have full or part time jobs, we volunteer, or are retired, Shabbat is crucial. Shabbat is not resting, not catching up on TV, or sleeping in, or just chilling with friends and family. It means taking a purposeful break from your normal routine. It doesn't have to happen on a Saturday or Sunday but should include opening our ears to God's voice and reflecting on our faith life. How would you rearrange your life to have more Shabbat in it?

Please let me know if you’d like to sit down and talk or enjoy a coffee, at a social distance of course, or feel free to call me at 785-670-0158, or email me at tbaker1102@yahoo.com. My office hours are Monday - Thursday 10 am - 3 pm. … Fr. Tom
When Simon and his companions found Jesus, they said to Jesus, "Everyone is searching for you."
Mark 1:37

People today continue to search for Jesus, for his message, his encouragement, his presence. As stewards, our task is to make Jesus present by what we say, what we do, how we act, how we support, how we love.
