History of St. Aidan's

To help celebrate the feast of St. Aidan’s this Sunday, August 29, I thought I’d share with you a short history about our church with some information taken from the 2000 Parish Directory.

The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 made Kansas a territory whose people would decide whether it was admitted to the Union as a slave or free state. This set off a rivalry with proslavery supporters from bordering Missouri. The conflict escalated into the violence known as “Bleeding Kansas.” In the midst of these turbulent times the first Episcopal service held in Olathe on May 8, 1858 in a private home and led by the Rev. Mr. John Drummond, a missionary priest living near Spring Hill. In 1862 Rev. B.T. Bensted came from Canada as an instructor at the Kansas School for the Deaf. The church grew under his leadership and, with the energies of the St. Bridget’s Chapter of the Daughters of the King, they built Emmanuel Church that stood until the 1960’s. In the next twenty years the church moved three times and changed its name to St. Aidan’s. In 1985 we moved to our current location.

Our parish was named in honor of Aidan of Lindisfarne, an Irish monk and missionary credited with converting the Anglo-Saxons in Northumbria to Christianity. An inspired missionary, Aidan would walk from one village to another, politely conversing with the people he saw and slowly interesting them in Christianity: in this, he followed the early apostolic model of conversion, by offering "them first the milk of gentle doctrine, to bring them by degrees, while nourishing them with the Divine Word, to the true understanding and practice of the more advanced precepts." For 162 years St. Aidan’s has been worshiping, healing, and serving our community and the Diocese of Kansas. I give thanks and hold in prayer all the men, women, and Rectors who have lived and died and have shaped and strengthened us. Yes, we face challenging times but so did those who came before us. Like them we will carry the torch of our heritage to light the way into a bright future.

Please let me know if you’d like to sit down and talk or enjoy a coffee, at a social distance of course, or feel free to call me at 785-670-0158, or email me at tbaker1102@yahoo.com. My office hours are Monday - Thursday 10 am - 3 pm. … Fr. Tom
Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights. James 1:17
It is easy not to remember that when we are generous, we are actually sharing in God's generosity. Our giving is part of God's perfect gift to us.

Relief Fund: 7.2 Earthquake in Haiti
On Saturday, August 14, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck the southwest portion of Haiti. This devastating earthquake was followed by Tropical Storm Grace on Monday night and much of Tuesday. More than 1 million children have been impacted by the back-to-back disasters, and the death toll is close to 2000.

Episcopal Relief and Development and its partners are responding immediately with direct assistance to vulnerable households in the region, as partners plan long term recovery.

Your generous gift can provide assistance to help people in the wake of these disasters.

BackSnack Program - 2021/2022 School Year!

Hello All:

I’ve received an initial e-mail from Harvesters about the beginning of the Backsnack program for this school year. Their first delivery of food is scheduled for the week of September 20, and they advised us to plan for first delivery to schools around October 1.

I just wanted to check in with everyone to see if you are on board for the new year. I’ve heard from David Kahn (who is currently on vacation) that he is good to go. I’m working on updating our calendar for this year, and confirming that we will still pick up our boxes from College Church. I don’t anticipate any significant changes from last year’s process for serving our 5 schools.

Please let me know if you are still OK with this year, and we’ll work together to make this another successful year for serving Olathe kids.

Many thanks,
Don Seifert

St. Aidan’s is in our second decade of working with five Olathe Elementary Schools in this important ministry.
