Fr. Tom's Talk
Ordinary

Here is a link to a YouTube video featuring Alain De Bottom who has written on love, travel, architecture and literature. His books have been bestsellers in 30 countries. I hope you find it interesting.

https://youtu.be/1KDB42qGT-8

God didn't put us here to become extraordinary. We're extraordinary, in our ordinariness, just because we are created by the God of the universe.

For me, part of what this video talks about, is the sickness of needing to be extraordinary, a sickness originating in our world that has embraced the value of power and wealth. The great message of the Gospel is that God loves YOU uniquely, and God loves everyone the same.

As he says at the very end of the video, "joy isn't making 10 million dollars. It's going to be a drink with a friend, a meal that turns out okay, a day at the end of which no one has died, there's been no crisis. Love isn't going to be perfection, but a hand held by somebody who understands bits of you, never the whole of you, but has charity through your darkest moments." He's right, though God is the one who overcomes the limitation of not knowing all of you. That's the beauty of the transcendent God. God knows and loves all of you, because God created you.

I encourage you to reflect about and talk with family members and friends these questions.

• How do you think Jesus would respond to “meritocracy”? Jesus says, “The last shall be first and the first shall be last.” How can we be the followers of Jesus in a society that values material accomplishments?

• Is a successful church one with abundant members or one that serves others?

• The video talks about how our society demands we must be extraordinary, a winner, before you are accepted and loved. How much do you think our mental health and addition problems are rooted in this belief?

Please let me know if you’d like to sit down and talk or enjoy a coffee, at a social distance of course, or feel free to call me at 785-670-0158, or email me at tbaker1102@yahoo.com. My office hours are Monday - Thursday 10 am - 3 pm. … Fr. Tom
Simon Peter answered him, "Lord to whom can we go? You have the word of eternal life. We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of Israel."
John 6:68-69
"Where else can we go?" asked Peter. Many who heard Jesus speak and saw what he did came to the same conclusion. We are their spiritual descendants...and it is part of our task to pass on the faith to our descendants. This is a difficult task today. The example of how we live our lives may well be the most powerful way of influencing others to seek Jesus and follow after him.

Relief Fund: 7.2 Earthquake in Haiti
On Saturday, August 14, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck the southwest portion of Haiti. This devastating earthquake was followed by Tropical Storm Grace on Monday night and much of Tuesday. More than 1 million children have been impacted by the back-to-back disasters, and the death toll is close to 2000.

Episcopal Relief and Development and its partners are responding immediately with direct assistance to vulnerable households in the region, as partners plan long term recovery.

Your generous gift can provide assistance to help people in the wake of these disasters.

To assist in these efforts, visit episcopalrelief.org/haiti-relief.
Center of Grace: Volunteers are need to help pass out food at Center of Grace on Thursday, July 22!
St. Aidan's helps prepare and hand out meals at Center of Grace in Olathe, on the fourth Thursday of the month. August 26 is our next day to serve. You're also welcome to drop off individually wrapped deserts to the church by 2 pm that Thursday.
BackSnack Program - 2021/2022 School Year!

Hello All:

I’ve received an initial e-mail from Harvesters about the beginning of the Backsnack program for this school year. Their first delivery of food is scheduled for the week of September 20, and they advised us to plan for first delivery to schools around October 1.

I just wanted to check in with everyone to see if you are on board for the new year. I’ve heard from David Kahn (who is currently on vacation) that he is good to go. I’m working on updating our calendar for this year, and confirming that we will still pick up our boxes from College Church. I don’t anticipate any significant changes from last year’s process for serving our 5 schools.

Please let me know if you are still OK with this year, and we’ll work together to make this another successful year for serving Olathe kids.

Many thanks,
Don Seifert

St. Aidan’s is in our second decade of working with five Olathe Elementary Schools in this important ministry.

We give thanks for the people of St. Aidan’s and the privilege of serving each other, our church and our community throughout the year. For Guidance and Grace
Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

 For Healing –
Heavenly Father, giver of life and health: Comfort and relieve your sick servants, and give your power of healing to those who minister to their needs, that those for whom our prayers are offered may be strengthened in their weakness and have confidence in your loving care; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
