 Triskaidekaphobia

As you may be aware, this Friday is August, Friday the thirteenth. Many on this day can suffer from “Triskaidekaphobia,” the fear or avoidance of the number 13. Triskaidekaphobia comes from the Ancient Greek treiskaídeka 'thirteen' and phóbos 'fear.'

According to folklore historian Donald Dossey, the unlucky nature of the number "13" originated with a Norse myth about 12 gods having a dinner party in Valhalla. The trickster god Loki, who was not invited, arrived as the 13th guest, and arranged for Höðr to shoot Balder with a mistletoe-tipped arrow. According to the legend, Balder died, and the whole Earth got dark. It was a bad, unlucky day. This major event in Norse mythology caused the number 13 to be considered unlucky.

In scripture the number 13 is symbolic of rebellion and lawlessness. Nimrod, the mighty hunter who was 'before the Lord' (meaning he tried to take the place of God - Genesis 10:9), was the 13th in Ham's line (Ham was one of Noah's three sons who survived the flood).

The phrase 'valley of Hinnom' occurs in 13 places in Scripture. The valley was the scene of the evil-inspired fire rites that sacrificed adults and children to the pagan god Moloch. The practices related to this false deity received some credibility when they were knowingly allowed by King Solomon (1Kings 11:7) in order to please his non-Israelite wives.

The valley's tie to fire is the backdrop for the punishment of unrepentant and rebellious sinners who are cast into the lake of fire (Revelation 19:20, 20:9 - 10, 14 - 15). Don’t let all this ruin your Friday. Just be sure to avoid Loki and the valley of Hinnom.

Please let me know if you’d like to sit down and talk or enjoy a coffee, at a social distance of course, or feel free to call me at 785-670-0158, or email me at tbaker1102@yahoo.com. My office hours are Monday - Thursday 10 am - 3 pm. … Fr. Tom
"This is the bread that came down from heaven."
John 6:58
Jesus asks his listeners to see beyond the obvious, to see not just earthly bread but heavenly as well. So rather than see the stranger, we can see our brother and sister.. Rather than see the needy, we can see those with less opportunity than us. Or rather than not see at all, we can open our eyes and ears to those whom we can assist.

BackSnack Program - 2021/2022 School Year!

Hello All:

I’ve received an initial e-mail from Harvesters about the beginning of the Backsnack program for this school year. Their first delivery of food is scheduled for the week of September 20, and they advised us to plan for first delivery to schools around October 1.

I just wanted to check in with everyone to see if you are on board for the new year. I’ve heard from David Kahn (who is currently on vacation) that he is good to go. I’m working on updating our calendar for this year, and confirming that we will still pick up our boxes from College Church. I don’t anticipate any significant changes from last year’s process for serving our 5 schools.

Please let me know if you are still OK with this year, and we’ll work together to make this another successful year for serving Olathe kids.

Many thanks,
Don Seifert

St. Aidan’s is in our second decade of working with five Olathe Elementary Schools in this important ministry.
