Daily Office

The backbone of our liturgical life as Episcopalians has always been the Daily Office. It’s roots go back to the practice of private prayer throughout the day in Judaism. By the 4th Century, Christian monasteries had developed a practice of daily prayers that included even more offices than its Jewish predecessor, and Christian Cathedrals had begun offering multiple daily prayer offices for the general public to participate in. After the Anglican Reformation, Thomas Cranmer included the offices of Morning and Evening Prayer in his first Book of Common Prayer. Additionally, our modern Prayer Book includes Noonday Prayer, An Order of Worship for Evening, Compline, and Daily Devotionals for Individuals and Families.

So how does one utilize the Daily Office? So glad you asked! Below are some tips and other handy information for incorporating the Daily Office into your faith life.

Don’t worry about doing the offices “right.” In our Book of Common Prayer the rubrics (italicized instructions) will guide you through the parts of the service, but it’s okay to add or take away elements as feels meaningful to you. For Morning and Evening Prayer, there is an option for Rite I (more traditional language) and Rite II (more modern language). Remember, the Daily Office is a practice: the more you do it, the more it does its work on you. Ideally, the Daily Office is meant to be just that: daily. For some, this means reading multiple offices each day, while others might feel better doing only one, short office a day - there’s room for all of the above!

If sifting through a Prayer Book and then looking up passages in your Bible is not for you, Forward Movement has you covered. Head to their website for updated daily readings. To make your Daily Office practice even more streamlined, check out the phone app from Mission of St. Clare.

Please let me know if you’d like to sit down and talk or enjoy a coffee, at a social distance of course, or feel free to call me at 785-670-0158, or email me at tbaker1102@yahoo.com. My office hours are Monday - Thursday 10 am - 3 pm. … Fr. Tom
Jesus told the people, "You are looking for me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life."
John 6:9
Jesus invites his followers to determine what is really important in life, and to seek after that. We today have so many distractions, so many opportunities to miss what God is calling us to be and do. Let's make a renewed effort to seek that which endures for eternal life.
