Fr. Tom's Talk ...

You saw it right? That container ship that got stuck in the Suez Canal. It was drama on a Shakespearean level, riveting people’s attention all over the world. All those ships stuck in a massive traffic jam. Billions of dollars wasted every day of the delay. I bet all of us probably had the same thought: “Thank God, I wasn’t steering that boat.”

Did you see the photo of the little crane on the bank pushing rather hopelessly against the huge vessel ten times its size? If that’s not a perfect image for this past year, I don’t know what is. For more than a year now year we’ve been living with impossibly heavy things. The pandemic, fear, death, political and racial divisions (to name a few) crush us under its weight. Like that tiny little crane, we keep trying to dig ourselves out. We argue over wearing masks, we wait to get the vaccine, we read news stories about fast spreading variants. But no matter how hard we may try we just can’t set ourselves free from impossibly heavy things.

In her Easter sermon our Bishop pointed out that the ship was finally freed when the first full super moon was aligned with the sun and earth causing the tide to raise enough to set the ship free. She went on to say that the resurrection of Jesus rises us above impossibly heavy things. As strong and as technologically advanced as we believe we are there are still impossibly heavy things that are beyond our lifting. Perhaps that’s what faith is, trusting God will lift all our impossibly heavy things. Not because we are worthy, or even that we asked for the help, but simply because we are loved. A love bigger and stronger than all our impossibly heavy things. A love that moved an impossibly heavy stone from the tomb.

Please let me know if you’d like to sit down and talk or enjoy a coffee, at a social distance of course, or feel free to call me at 785-670-0158, or email me at tbaker1102@yahoo.com. My office hours are Monday - Thursday 10 am - 3 pm. … Fr. Tom
Although the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." John 20:19
The world can be a frightening place for us. The disciples too had much to fear, but Jesus encourages them, and so us too, to put aside our fear and be at peace within ourselves and with those around us.
