Fr. Tom's Talk ...

Lent is a time when we traditionally focus on prayer, service, fasting, and repentance. Last week we talked about prayer. Today, I want to talk about fasting.

The whole point of fasting is to purposely empty out a space to allow God in. It can sound rather simple but there is no point in giving something up if you don’t take something in. When you fast a particular food and that craving feeling hits it can become a time to invite God into that empty place you’ve created. When you fast an activity, like watching TV, you can invite God into the time you created with prayer, Bible study, or devotional reading.

Scripture strongly encourages us to fast both in the Old and New Testament. It is interesting to me that every religion employs fasting as part of its religious practice. Perhaps because it forces us to open up and to let the divine inside. It is an intentional action that ritualizes that our God is not distant nor uncaring but that God will never stop trying to connect with us.

Please let me know if you’d like to sit down and talk or enjoy a coffee, at a social distance of course, or feel free to call me at 785-670-0158, or email me at tbaker1102@yahoo.com. My office hours are Monday - Thursday 10 am - 3 pm. … Fr. Tom
The message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 1 Corinthians 1:18

Lent is a foolishness to many people, but to we Christians it can be a time of spiritual growth and healing, a time of grace and forgiveness, a time of challenge and hope.

And, special thanks to Dr. Tracey S. Fisher, author ✍️ of Little Big Change . . . for many of the book recommendations. Please stop by St. Aidan’s Library on Thursday during Office hours or before or after church ⛪️ on Sundays.”

Eternal Lord God, you hold all souls in life: Give to your whole Church in paradise and on earth your light and your peace; and grant that all your faithful people may at the last enter into your unending joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Guidance and Grace
Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

 For Healing –
Heavenly Father, giver of life and health: Comfort and relieve your sick servants, and give your power of healing to those who minister to their needs, that those for whom our prayers are offered may be strengthened in their weakness and have confidence in your loving care; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
