Fr. Tom's Talk ...

Lent is a time when we traditionally focus on prayer, service, fasting, and repentance. Today I’d like to talk about repentance. Not many of us want to talk about it or think about repentance mostly because it brings up within us feelings of guilt and shame. The Book of Genesis tells us that in the Garden of Eden Adam and Eve once joined God in walks through the garden. Then after succumbing to temptation Adam and Eve hid themselves from God breaking the once intimate relationship they had with God. That’s what shame and guilt does: it cuts us off from God, leaving us alone.

Repentance actually has nothing to do with guilt nor shame. Perhaps that’s too hard for us to believe. We can so easily feel guilty for our wrongs and our feelings of being unable to do what brings us closer to God. That’s why it is so crucial to realize that the word repentance literally means stop and turn around. It does not involve guilt but an awareness that one needs to turn around. Unfortunately too often we allow our sins to stop us in our tracks get bogged down in our shame and never turn around. Let’s say you drive to Chicago, to see a Cubs game (of course). As you’re driving you see a sign saying New Orleans 50 miles. You stop on the side of the road, cuss yourself out, then get in the car and continue on to New Orleans. What good is that? Instead, repentance calls us to simply get back inside your car, turn around and drive to Chicago. Rather than feeling guilt we need to have recognition. To recognize we’re going the wrong direction and turn around. Get a seat in the bleachers and enjoy the game.

Please let me know if you’d like to sit down and talk or enjoy a coffee, at a social distance of course, or feel free to call me at 785-670-0158, or email me at tbaker1102@yahoo.com. My office hours are Monday - Thursday 10 am - 3 pm. … Fr. Tom
"Those who do what is true come to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that their deeds have been done in God." John 3:21
Lent is a good time to further align our deeds with those of God. A Christian steward strives always to do that which God would want to see done.

Eternal Lord God, you hold all souls in life: Give to your whole Church in paradise and on earth your light and your peace; and grant that all your faithful people may at the last enter into your unending joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Guidance and Grace
Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

 For Healing –
Heavenly Father, giver of life and health: Comfort and relieve your sick servants, and give your power of healing to those who minister to their needs, that those for whom our prayers are offered may be strengthened in their weakness and have confidence in your loving care; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
