Fr. Tom's Talk ...
With apologies to those who attended church last Sunday, I wanted to share with you some thoughts from my sermon that parishioners found helpful.
In 1971 Judy, the daughter of my Aunt Irene married Marvin. He was a handsome man getting ready to receive his Ph.D in history and he was black. I found out about Marvin’s race in the back seat of our car on the way to their wedding. I was asked not to be shocked. Not to stare. Even though interracial marriages were becoming a bit more visible in the 70’s my parents told me that Marvin and Judy were taking a very dangerous step.
In our Gathering of Clergy we talked about how the Episcopal Church has contributed to the legacy of racism and white supremacy. For many the first reaction will be - “Oh no, I can’t possibly be racist!” Yet, Church records in Virginia reveal notation after notation of black persons being sold for the benefit of the parish.
Our own St Aidans is located on Black Bob Road, named for the last Shawnee Chief to resist leaving what was known as Indian Territory. We can still say to ourselves that we had no part in any of that. Still, less than a hundred years ago the Olathe news wrote “The Black Bob group did not divide the land into individual tracts, as was the American's custom; his band, being of limited intelligence.”
During the Clergy Gathering we prayed laments for our churches’ role in profiting from the selling and trading black persons. On Saturday we spent the day examining, even though we proclaim to not be racist, how we all take part in institutional and structural racism. We ended with a service of repentance.
To be honest, it was a difficult and exhausting three days. It’s never easy looking into the mirror and seeing racism. We left with a charge from our Bishop to see where and how in our own communities racism continues and more importantly ask ourselves how we will respond and repair the ugliness of racism.
Please reflect and pray how we can use art and how we want to actively respond to our Bishops call. My next Tom’s Talk will share more information.

Please let me know if you’d like to sit down and talk or enjoy a coffee, at a social distance of course, or feel free to call me. My office hours are Monday - Thursday 10 am - 3 pm. … Fr. Tom
“Rejoice in the Lord always. And again I say rejoice!"” Philippians 4:4
This well known verse goes on to say, let your gentleness be known, be anxious for nothing, but in everything pray with thanksgiving. In these challenging times, doing this will bring us the peace that guards our hearts and minds. It will also be an encouragement to others to seek the Lord.

Thanksgivings –
We give thanks for the birthday of Tajuania Walters. We give thanks for the people of St. Aidan’s and the privilege of serving each other, our church and our community throughout the year. We give thanks for the faithfulness and resilience of St. Aidan's parish as we all work together during this difficult time, finding new ways to stay connected in spite of the challenges.

Cycle of Prayer –
In the Anglican Cycle of Prayer, we pray for the Church in the Province of the West Indies. In the World Council of Churches Cycle of Prayer, we pray for the people of Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. In the Kansas Cycle of Prayer, we pray for the youth ministries of the diocese.

For Our Parish Leadership –
We pray for our rector, Rev. Tom Baker and his wife, Cherie. We pray for the members of the Vestry: Senior Warden Julie Wojtas, Jane Bush, Mark Sappenfield, Sarah Smith and Kathy Mencer; for the Vestry Clerk, Carolyn Sturgeon; for our Treasurer, Tim Tatlock; and for our delegates, Carolyn Sturgeon, and Sarah Smith.

For Our Troops, Veterans, and Law Enforcement –
Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care and keeping all the men and women in the service and law enforcement at home and broad. Defend them with your grace; give them courage; and grant them a sense of your abiding presence; through Jesus Christ. Amen.

For the Departed –
Eternal Lord God, you hold all souls in life: Give to your whole Church in paradise and on earth your light and your peace; and grant that all your faithful people may at the last enter into your unending joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Guidance and Grace
Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

 For Healing –
Heavenly Father, giver of life and health: Comfort and relieve your sick servants, and give your power of healing to those who minister to their needs, that those for whom our prayers are offered may be strengthened in their weakness and have confidence in your loving care; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
