The Month of May was worth the wait!

The saying goes, “April Showers bring May flowers!” It doesn’t say to what extent that may happen! We have been through some severe weather days with major late afternoon and night thunderstorms, tornadoes, hail, winds and rain amounts. It brings to mind, “watch what you pray for, you just might get it!” Thankfully, we’ve made it with no damage or loss. We have come through the shift from winter to spring and there is a lot to enjoy and celebrate this coming month.

I remember elementary schools in my hometown celebrating “May Day” with spring clothing, special food, a May pole dance with all participating and marking May 1st as a special day.

Being an official Kentucky Colonel (Charter signed by Governor John Y Brown of KYC Fame) and an Ambassador for Makers Mark, Mary and I have always celebrated the Kentucky Derby the first weekend in May. My seminary years were in the Kentucky Bluegrass, and it is where Mary and I met. We both had past times of being at the Derby and find it a fun way to start Springtime. Ladies, get out your spring hats and I can now officially start wearing my seersucker suit.

Another day of celebration for some is Cinco de Mayo. We at St. Aidan’s will be gathering for this on Wednesday May 6th for some good Mexican food and perhaps a Margarita or two. Come join the fun and fellowship! There will be more details as we come closer to this event.

Mother’s Day comes next and we will celebrate that on Sunday, May 10th.

During the next weeks we will be remembering Jesus’s Ascension on Sunday, May 17th and the bestowing of the Holy Spirit to all on Pentecost Sunday, May 24th. It also happens to be Memorial Day weekend on the 24th and thus the Indianapolis 500 and for many, the mental threshold of the coming of Summer. Schools will be letting out, students will be graduating or making plans for vacations.

It is a busy month, yet we will celebrate each part as the month unfolds. We can celebrate the shift in our own lives with the empowering of each of us with God’s Holy Spirit to be no longer dependent disciples waiting to be led like sheep, but as Apostles of Good News and shepherds in a world where many do not know about Jesus and the Holy Spirit. That one thing alone is worthy of celebration!

                                                                       Fr. Steve+
