Notes from Father Steve

May as a month of Celebrations

The first item of “Celebration” is my thanks and gratitude for all who helped make our Lenten Study gatherings a true success! I also want to thank Mark Pretzel for his gift of music, and the Altar Guild that was on overtime duty with Holy Week and the many small and large tweaks that help make our worship so meaningful! It was fun to celebrate Easter with a baptism and the related cakes that were part of the fun time together. Thank you also to all the other Rota volunteers, lecturers, ushers/greeters, intercessors and those who brought their goodies for the after service gathering. Thank you all!!

The first weekend of May brings me, as a son of the Bluegrass, to the celebration of the Kentucky Derby. I am an actual Kentucky Colonel and an Ambassador for Maker’s Mark. My Seminary was in Lexington and life watching horses run with a mint julep in hand is a marker for me of the true start of Spring! Looking at the lady’s hats, wearing lighter, more colorful clothing means you can wear “white” again!

Cinco de Mayo is another theme to be celebrated with a nod toward the Hispanic culture and the fun of gathering with friends and sharing some good Mexican fare and maybe a margarita to cap it off.

May 11th, we celebrate “Mother’s Day”. I have also included the idea of celebrating the feminine side of all creation on this day along with the very important role of how mothers define, nurture and direct the lives of young children that they bring into this world and lovingly support in formative years. It is an important day! Many who may not be actual mothers also take on similar roles of loving care with adopted children, foster kids or stepchildren. It may also be as a nurse, teacher, aunt, or any form of care giving.

May 11th also happens to be the 45th anniversary of my ordination as a Deacon in the Church. What a ride!

Monday, May 26th we remember those who gave their lives to protect our liberty and way of life here In the United States. I want to thank those who served in our military for their commitment and service in peace and in times of danger. We need to pause and remember the names of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice of their lives so we can be free and able to gather in our faith community of Saint Aidan’s with no fear and able to worship in our Episcopal tradition.

To end our month of celebrations, on Thursday, May 29th, we celebrate the Ascension of Our Lord. It’s 40 days since Jesus Resurrected and he said several times that He would return to the Father and this is the event. It was important to Him to give the band of followers a purpose and means to fulfill their ministry in the world. The Great Commission is given to answer the question “By What Method?” when living into the Great Commandment of “Love Your Lord God with all of your heart, mind, soul and strength, and then your neighbor as yourself” The Apostles are told to go and baptize and share the light love of good news in a dark world! We get to do just this with a baptism in 10 more days on Pentecost

It truly is a month worthy of our celebration!
