Father Steve is Back and New Status

After spending last weekend in the hospital dealing with a heart rhythm issue, we welcome Father Steve back to celebrate with us this Sunday, May 18. He thanks all for support and prayers during his absence.

And there is more good news! At its meeting Wednesday, the Vestry unanimously called Fr. Steve to the position of Rector of St. Aidan's. He will continue to serve with us indefinitely on a part time basis as defined in an updated letter of agreement between St. Aidan's, the Bishop of Kansas, and Steve. The change is mainly in Steve's priestly status, as the term "priest-in-charge" has transitory implications. There will be no change in Steve's compensation, duties, or expectations.

From his first introduction to St. Aidan's late last year, Fr. Steve expressed interest in a more permanent arrangement here if we mutually felt there was a good "fit." We have gotten to know each other during the past 5 months, and comments and feedback from the parish, the Vestry, the Bishop, and Fr. Steve have all been positive. Accordingly, the Vestry has set aside plans for clergy search.

I expect Fr. Steve will have more to say on Sunday, but for now, thanks to all at St. Aidan's for your support, and congratulations to Fr. Steve Rottgers!

Rector's Discretionary Fund Sundays

It is standard practice in all Episcopal churches to provide for a fund to be used at the discretion of clergy for emergency assistance, shelter, or other needs that are made known to the parish. Disbursements from the fund can be made to persons both within and without a particular congregation. St. Aidan's has such a fund, and we have designated the plate cash from the first Sunday of each month for the discretionary fund. The fund also receives designated donations from parish members that are welcomed at any time.

In recent months, the discretionary fund has dwindled at times to almost nothing or zero, and clergy have been unable to meet legitimate needs. To address this, the Vestry has asked that we remind the people of St. Aidan's to be mindful of this fund in addition to your regular pledge or giving. All contributions to the fund will be used wisely by Fr. Steve.

In 1970, when I was a first semester freshman student at Sewanee, I remember receiving a $5 check from the discretionary fund from St. John's, my church in Parsons. I can't say it was an emergency, but it left a lasting impression on me. I wasn't old enough then to buy beer, so I hope I put it to some good use!

Thanks for your support and consideration.
