Blessing of the Animals
St. Francis of Assisi, who is likely most celebrated as the patron saint of nature and especially animals, was a man who renounced the life of wealth from his family of origin and took on the mantel of humility and poverty. He left little in writing although he is remembered for his poem Song of Creation and also The Prayer of St. Francis which begins, "Make me a channel of your peace…" St. Francis' feast day is October 4. St. Aidan's has a tradition of celebrating the Feast of St. Francis with a worship service, "Blessing the Animals" on the Sunday afternoon close to October 4. Pets of all sizes and species come with their people to celebrate the day and receive a blessing.
